Happy New year! And why Is so hard to change

Points

I’m back in my country, the great Tupiniquim continent called Brazil, and let me tell you: coming at this time of year (December-January) gives an even better taste to a season I’ve always loved. The end of the year is SUPER special to me; if before it was already a mix of beachy summer, my birthday, Christmas, and New Year’s, now add to all of that a seasoning of reconnecting with friends and my homeland.

Anyway, in this whole process, I end up reflecting a lot about what I want for 2026, how to do it, what goals to set and why do so many plans I make in January end up forgotten by March? Why is it so hard to change?
In this questioning of mine, I went looking for inspiration in people I admire to try and help myself.
Most people are shit at making plans. We are emotional monkeys full of anxiety. We want to eat the banana before even planting the tree and when we don’t fulfill our plans, motivation drops and self-confidence weakens; it becomes easier to quit. At the end of the day, it’s less about big dreams fulfilled and more about small self-commitments kept.
A friend and I divide the year into 3 month’s period and set at most 2 goals for each. And we spend a hole day just thinking what really is the priority and what sentiment we want to feel and the mentality we need to be at.I think bringing feelings really helps at the end of day to remember what we are striving for.
Big dreams don’t depend only on discipline. Usually, we seek something because we are inspired or we are in pain. They are two sides of the same coin: one captivates you, the other hurts you. The thing is, these things are temporary; they depend on the mood. You get used to the pain, and the inspiration eventually runs out.
Then you think your problem is discipline. You martyrize yourself thinking the problem is your lack of determination, that you should be firmer with your routine and all this shit when in reality we need to ask: do you think an athlete reaches the Olympics only because of an iron resilience? That a CEO spends nigths working or that fitted guy in the gym is have that body just because they are disciplined? Discipline is super important, but what really made them get where they got is the lifestyle they have; it’s the personality they built.
If you want something from life, you need to create a lifestyle that enables it.
Your mindset and your relationship with your dream have to change, only then things will start to change and little by little something truly lasting happens.
Why is soo difficult to change and be the person we dream to be and quit habits we known are problematic is something I REALLLLY want to understand mostly to know more about myself. I have learning about the process of individuation of jung, Spiral Dynamics and Greuter’s stages of ego development but still don’t get it yet. will be writing about it someday.

To end, Happy new year! HAPPY 2026!
