It must be fun

You go further when you are having fun. Life is not a fucking performance or a test.

You need to enjoy the thing you are making.

I was talking with a friend the other day about work and why, even after careful planning and consideration, some things simply do not work while other things flow. There are many reasons, of course, but one thing that crossed my mind was: Fun.

I was born in December and maybe because of this, it is the most special month of the year. A time to rethink, remember, and start fresh as the turn of the year approaches. Maybe that’s why, during the conversation, I thought about how much we change over the years: our worldview expands, our skills improve, we start thinking about our space in society and caring about how we look while that bubble gum ice cream flavor stops being appealing.

It also made me remember how much fun my childhood days were, playing endlessly. My imagination was insane (at least for my point of view), seeing ninjas jump from building to building, creating a new game to play everyday and thinking about the wars between ants in my school garden. My mind was in the present. I did things because I liked them; it didn’t matter if they were cringey.

I miss the idea that I could do things with worrying or thinking about how I looked. Taking pictures? It was a distraction. One time, I spent a whole week of my vacation digging a hole in an attempt to make a subterranean base. Efficiency and practicality were afterthoughts, I was having too much fun to think about that.

Now, I see everyone doing things to show others, to get ahead on the next important topic, to be “productive.” Enjoyment becomes a secondary thing. We feel the need to look cool and efficient. We do something already expecting validation.

In this rabbit hole, little by little, we fucking lose ourselves. We start prioritizing the perception of others. Also, things have a WAAAAY higher chance of being good if the author is enjoying making them. I’m not saying they aren’t taking it seriously, but when you enjoy it, you go further.

Maybe there are things that do not work because we think about them too much, we burry then in a wave of anxiety and expectations without thinking about the most important thing : The joy of doing it

Life is an experience to be enjoyed, not just performed. Be fucking free.
